Apple cider vinegar, or apple cider vinegar, is widely used for weight loss. Although its effectiveness is always questioned, there are indeed many investigations that have linked its main active component,  acetic acid, with weight loss, reduction of body fat, and lowering of blood sugar levels.

What is apple cider vinegar?

Let’s start at the beginning. Apple cider vinegar is made in a two-step fermentation process.

First, the apples are cut or crushed and mixed with yeast to convert their sugar into alcohol. Second, bacteria are added to ferment the alcohol into acetic acid, which is the main active ingredient in this vinegar.

One tablespoon (15 ml) of apple cider vinegar contains approximately three calories and virtually zero carbohydrates.

Why it helps to lose weight and burn fat

Acetic acid is a short-chain fatty acid that dissolves into acetate and hydrogen in the body. Some animal studies suggest that the acetic acid in apple cider vinegar may promote weight loss by lowering blood sugar, lowering insulin, speeding up metabolism, reducing fat storage, and acting as a natural fat-burning potential. Also, it has been proven to suppress appetite.

Most of the research that has been done to date on this food has been done on animals, so there is still a lack of data to effectively prove that vinegar helps you lose weight. However, the results of this human study did show that consuming apple cider vinegar has powerful effects on weight and body fat.

The research lasted 12 weeks and included 144 obese Japanese adults who were divided into three groups: one consumed one tablespoon (15 ml) of vinegar per day, another two tablespoons (30 ml) per day, and the third group took a placebo. All participants were asked not to consume alcohol and to eat as usual.

After analyzing the results, after three months, it was found that those who had consumed a tablespoon (15 ml) of vinegar per day lost 1.2 kilos, reduced their body fat by 0.7%, a 1.4-centimeter waist, and decreased their triglycerides by 26%.

Those who took two tablespoons of vinegar per day lost 1.7 kilos, 0.9% fat, almost 2 centimeters from their waist, and 26% triglycerides. Those in the third group, the placebo group, gained half a kilo.

Thus, according to this study, collected by Health, adding one or two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the diet can help us lose weight. It can also reduce the percentage of body fat, cause us to lose abdominal fat, and lower blood triglycerides.

As we have said, and although this study was quite large, more research is needed. further studies.

How to take apple cider vinegar

You can include apple cider vinegar in your diet by using it as a dressing or in cooking. Some people drink it bareback.

The amount of apple cider vinegar that is used to lose weight is to start with a teaspoon once a day, and if we see that it suits us, move on to taking one or two tablespoons (15-30 ml) a day, mixed with water. It is best to take them in two or three doses a day and not all at once, as it has been proven to increase the feeling of satiety, which will make us less hungry between meals.

Experts warn that taking more apple cider vinegar than indicated can cause unwanted side effects, such as digestive discomfort, nausea, loss of tooth enamel, or throat burns, among others.
